Forensic Mental Health (Sex Offender Treatment) Specialization 

The Doctoral Specialization at the Northbridge Institute of Forensic Studies was created to address a significant gap in most doctoral programs in the fields of human sexuality, sexology, sexual medicine, and psychosexual therapy: the absence of a structured forensic focus in sex offender treatment. 

Our program is designed for licensed mental health professionals pursuing doctoral studies, and through Northbridge, candidates can build upon their home institution’s curriculum while developing specialist expertise that prepares them for clinical and academic work in forensic settings.

Program Structure

The specialization is designed to run concurrently with your PhD candidature and can be pursued in two ways:

Standalone Specialization Pathway

Completed alongside your home university’s PhD program, adding an additional forensic dimension to your doctoral training.

Collaborative Curriculum Development

In partnership with your home university or institute, Northbridge can formalize a co-designed curriculum that integrates directly into your doctoral program, with the approval of your university.

Didactic Education

Advanced coursework in forensic psychosexual theory, assessment, and treatment of sex offenders.

Personal Psychotherapy

Required to ensure clinical readiness and reflective capacity for the complexity of forensic psychosexual work.

Supervised Forensic Practice

Practical experience in forensic settings, with documented hours of supervised practice.

Publication Requirement

Completion of a dissertation, alongside a peer-reviewed article,with a forensic focus, ensuring candidates contribute to the academic literature in this field.
